Meet Cassie

Both my writing and my art are a kind of creative nonfiction.

I use layered acrylics with heavy applications of water, often on hard, less-permeable surfaces, offering an emotional and fluid dimension to each piece. My work renders familiar forms and feelings in a richness of color, tone, and texture.

I do the same thing, almost exactly, with writing. But it’s true what they say, about pictures and words, and how many of each are required to capture a thing.

The Process

First, I capture the attitude and defining characteristics of the animal. Then I prepare the board and background, apply heavy texturing and blocking, and set about the long process of building up layers of water-carried acrylic color. I work with color spread and flow and migration on the board, blending and bleeding, bubbling and texturizing, and allow each layer to dry between applications. I correct the shading and detail and saturation until the image arrives at its completion—a surprising thrill, every time. It takes over a month of daily layering and detail work to complete a single large-form piece.
